Aberdeen-based removal firm The Shore Porters’ Society has achieved trainer status to deliver soon-to-be introduced, compulsory courses for drivers of LGVs (Large Goods Vehicles).

The company’s Granite City base on Baltic Place has now been approved as a training centre to offer the Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) course.

As of September 10, 2009, it will be a legal requirement for all drivers of lorries over 3.5 tonnes, buses and minibuses to complete the training, which is being introduced across Europe as part of EU legislation being implemented to maintain high driving standards and improve road safety.

From this date, all new drivers will be required to pass the Driver CPC if they plan on embarking on a career involving professional driving.

And following the completion of the course, drivers will have to continuously undergo periodic training to continue to hold the qualification – undertaking 35 hours of tuition every five years.

Shore Porters achieved trainer status following an audit by JAUPT (Joint Approval Unit for Periodic Training) – which is governed by the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) – after the organisation considered the firm’s application against key criteria.

Ray McLaughlan, Shore Porters’ senior trainer – who has more than 25 years experience in driver instruction and training – will be the principal instructor for the courses and the company’s training manager, Michael Shouls, hailed the achievement as an exciting development for the company.

He said: “To have been approved by JAUPT, which assessed our highly experienced staff and facilities against set criteria, is an extremely positive development for Shore Porters, allowing us to further expand the range of services we offer.

“With individuals and business having the opportunity to pretty much tailor their courses – providing all content is linked to the qualification directive syllabus – they can undertake the most relevant training for them and their roles.

“A host of various topics can be covered – from tacographs to drivers’ hours and from customer service to driving in London – and we look forward to drawing on our experience and expertise to deliver courses which delegates will draw the maximum benefits from.”
